BOOKS for the BARRIOS is truly "a project of the heart!" Help us keep making a difference. From donations to volunteering to joining our staff, there are many opportunities for you or your group to positively impact the lives of children in impoverished, conflicted areas around the globe.
MAKE A DONATION
Donate Educational Supplies
Collect the things we seek and bring them to the BOOKS for the BARRIOS National Children's Education Sharing Center in Concord, California. We are in need of children's books, toys and consumable educational supplies like crayons, markers, pens, pencils, glue, etc.
School Sponsorship
Library Launch $5,000
- Material Resource – 35 cases including books, National Geographic magazines, stuffed animals, and an encyclopedia set. Door to door delivery.
- Training – Professional literacy instruction training for faculty; library science curriculum development.
- Political Support – Organization of the local officials (mayor, governor, imam, barangay captain, US and Host National Armed Forces) to invest in the world-class upgrade and long-term maintenance of the school.
Legacy Library $10,000
- Building renovation – Electrical/lighting, tile flooring, bookshelves, fixtures and cabinets, wall mural, and Legacy Library sign recognizing donors. (60 working days).
- Material Resource – 35 cases including books, National Geographic magazines, stuffed animals, and an encyclopedia set. Door to door delivery.
- Training – Professional literacy instruction training for faculty; library science curriculum development.
- Political Support – Organization of the local officials (mayor, governor, imam, barangay captain, US and Host National Armed Forces) to invest in the world-class upgrade and long-term maintenance of the school.
Model of Excellence School $12,000
- Building renovation – Electrical/lighting, tile flooring, bookshelves, fixtures and cabinets, and wall mural.
- Material Resource – 35 cases including books, National Geographic magazines, stuffed animals, and an encyclopedia set. Door to door delivery.
- Training – Professional literacy instruction training for faculty; library science curriculum development.
- Political Support – Organization of the local officials (mayor, governor, imam, barangay captain, US and Host National Armed Forces) to invest in the world-class upgrade and long-term maintenance of the school.
- Permanent membership in National “Model of Excellence” School Program implemented by the Department of Education. Continuous mentor level training and logistical and political support.
Support Library Projects
You can make a donation that supplies all or part of the many aspects needed to build modern, world-class libraries for impoverished children. Support a complete library renovation, or one of the many individual projects that combine to produce a fully functional, world-class library.

JOIN AS A VOLUNTEER
Our programs at BOOKS for the BARRIOS are made possible through the efforts of thousands of dedicated citizens who volunteer their time. Many of our volunteers are fulfilling community service hours. Thousands of volunteers have helped us over the past 10 years, and scores are currently dedicating their time today.
Volunteers are our lifeline. In fact, we are so dedicated to spending as much as possible on benefiting children and teachers that we have only one paid, part-time staff member. The tireless dedication of our volunteers allows us to answer the call of people in need.
If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, consider giving a few hours of your time. You will help make a difference in the lives of millions of children, and help improve the environment at the same time. You will get back in gratification as much as you give in time and effort. Our volunteers enjoy working on a team with other committed people, supporting and learning from one another.
BOOKS for the BARRIOS needs volunteers to provide a wide range of services including:
- Sourcing donations of books and other educational materials
- Social networking and marketing
- Fundraising activities
- Office administration / IT services
- Teacher training consulting (for experienced elementary school teachers)
MAKE A MATCHING CONTRIBUTION
Tell your employer or organization that you are supporting BOOKS for the BARRIOS and ask them to make a donation, too. More and more companies are supporting the causes of their employees by donating to their non-profit choices. If your employer has a matching program, be sure to apply. If not, talk to the person in charge of donations or community outreach about taking action. It's good for the community, good for your company's image, and tax-deductible.

GROUP INVOLVEMENT
Involve your group in activities that will enrich them and impact their lives forever. Get hands-on experience with our mission, from helping pack books to educational demonstrations, and fundraising activities.
BOOKS for the BARRIOS invites you to come on a working group field trip to our National Children's Education Sharing Center in Concord, California. During the two-hour, hands-on participatory activity, U.S. children learn to:
- Reach out in friendship to children in other parts of the world
- Reuse educational resources responsibly
- Think globally and act locally
- Support American Military forces in conflict areas overseas

DONATE MATERIALS
Many of the barrio schools to which BOOKS for the BARRIOS offers assistance have only a handful of books. School libraries are unheard of. Other educational materials such as science kits, pre-school learning games and computers are non-existent. In many cases, an entire class may share a single outdated, tattered book. For many children, the modern books delivered by BOOKS for the BARRIOS are the first they have ever seen that are written for children.
Have your group collect the materials we seek and bring them to the BOOKS for the BARRIOS National Children's Education Sharing Center in Concord, California.
